Biologic Institute Preserves with the CLOCKSS Archive

June 23, 2011

The CLOCKSS Archive is pleased to announce that it has partnered with Biologic Institute to preserve their e-content in CLOCKSS's geographically and geopolitically distributed network of redundant archive nodes, located at 12 major research libraries around the world. By archiving with CLOCKSS, Biologic Institute has committed to the preservation of their e-content. This action provides for content to be freely available to everyone after a "trigger event" and ensures an author's work will be maximally accessible and useful over time.

According to Biologic Institute Director Douglas Axe, “We are strongly supportive of the transition from old-style publishing, where the dissemination of scholarly work was in the hands of a few large publishers, to the new model, where the scholars themselves can set up fully functional peer-reviewed journals. One of the challenges that had to be overcome for this to be possible was the perception that small publishers, being less well established than large ones, were less able to guarantee the permanence of what they publish. CLOCKSS provides the critically important solution to this by offering permanent availability of electronic content at a cost that even small non-profit publishers can afford.”

CLOCKSS Executive Director Randy S. Kiefer adds, "CLOCKSS welcomes Biologic Institute’s e-content into the community's archive. CLOCKSS has achieved a rare consensus among libraries and publishers, and we are grateful as Biologic Institute joins the CLOCKSS Archive for its generous willingness to preserve its e-content in a way that secures it for the long-term good of scholars worldwide."

About Biologic Institute: Biologic Institute is a nonprofit research organization founded in 2005 for the purpose of developing and testing the scientific case for intelligent design in biology and exploring its scientific implications. Beginning in 2010, it has published BIO-Complexity, an open-access, peer-reviewed scientific journal. http://biologicinstitute.org http://bio-complexity.org

Thieme joins the CLOCKSS Archive, A Cost Effective Archiving Solution for Libraries and Publishers Around the Globe

May 18, 2010

Stuttgart - Thieme Publishing Group has joined CLOCKSS (Controlled Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe), a community-governed, non-profit joint venture between the world's leading scholarly publishers and research libraries. These organizations are working together to guarantee the permanent survival of academic digital content beyond the twenty-first century. Additional participants in this continuously growing international project include Stanford University, the Royal Society, Elsevier, and the University of Hong Kong.

"Archiving and securing the permanent availability of eJournals is of paramount importance. We at Thieme are pleased to participate in and support this initiative, while working in conjunction with the international publishing community,” says Thomas Connertz, Director Thieme eJournals.

Ten years ago, Stanford University librarians developed the innovative LOCKSS technology, upon which this project is based. The CLOCKSS archive is distributed across a global and geopolitically diverse network of archive nodes, and governed by all its participants. Content no longer available from any publisher (“triggered content”) is made available for free. In the case that any content from Thieme becomes triggered, CLOCKSS will release it to the world under a creative commons license to ensure it remains available forever.

By archiving with CLOCKSS, Thieme Publishing Group is ensuring that content from Thieme eJournals remains as useful as possible and will always be available, when needed, to all scholars around the world.

About Thieme - Thieme Publishing Group is a privately held STM publishing house employing more than 950 people and maintains offices in New York, Delhi, Stuttgart and three other locations in Germany. CLOCKSS (Controlled Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe) is a community-governed, not-for-profit archive founded by librarians and publishers to ensure the long-term availability of scholarly digital content. The archive is distributed across a worldwide network of twelve geographically and geopolitically diverse archive nodes.

This latest group of publishers to join CLOCKSS collectively archives over 60 journals, and adds to the diversity of publishers in the CLOCKSS community: from society publishers and university presses, to open-access publishers such as Co-Action.

As part of joining CLOCKSS, publishers agree to release their archived content to the world for free if a time comes when it is no longer available from any publisher (“trigger event”). The new participating publishers will also each appoint representatives to the CLOCKSS board. The board is made up of world-leading publishers and libraries who work together to govern the archive and set strategies and policies.

“CLOCKSS is pleased to work with such a diverse group of publishers. We designed the archive to benefit the entire scholarly publishing community: open access, commercial, non-profit, and society publishers, small and large,” said Gordon Tibbitts, CLOCKSS Executive Director and President of Atypon. “By keeping costs low and involving all participants in archive decisions, CLOCKSS has built a strong community and can preserve as wide a range of scholarly materials as possible.”

About CLOCKSS CLOCKSS (Controlled LOCKSS) is a not-for-profit joint venture between the world’s leading scholarly publishers and research libraries whose mission is to build a sustainable, geographically distributed dark archive with which to ensure the long-term survival of Web-based scholarly publications for the benefit of the greater global research community.
